Morelan also pointed out that some employees are on the $9
plan, while others are on the $12 plan. The City pays $9 per month
toward this coverage. Morelan asked if consideration has ever been given
to the City payin,~ the full cost.
Scalze pointed out that tl~e cost is $12 per month now, but there is no
guarantee it will remain at the $12 rate.
Morelan pointed out that it would cost the City an additional $27 per
month to pay for this life insurance coverage. The Administrator
suggested that this issue could be looked at during budget time.
Fahey suggested that the City would have to look ii~to the life insurance
benefit as part of the total compensation package. Fahey felt that the
benefit package provided to City employees was liberal compared to
private business.
Mr. Morelan introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOI, UTION NO. 98-4-97 - REJECTING STiI FF'S
RECOMMENDATION THAT THE PERSONNE7, POI ICY ]3E
AMBNDED TO MANDATE I,IFE IN.SUR4NCE COVERAGE FOR
CITY EMPI,OYEES, ANI~ DIRECTING STAFF TO RESEARCH
WEIAT OTHER CITIES DO IN TERM.S OF PROVIDING LIFE
INSDR,9NCE AND REPORT I3ACK TO THE COUNCIL ON THIS
ISS(JE A.S PART OF THE 1999 ]3UDGET PROCESS
12
