MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JONE 24,1998
Fahey pointed out that kids playing ball cannot dive for a fly ball without
coming up covered with poop. F1hey fe(t there was something wrong
when animals can poop wherever they want and people have to put up
with it Fahey felC thlt tl~e situation needed to be controlled and it was a
nuisance. tfthere is another program available that can correct or
minimize the problem, that would be fine.
Chester stated that she does not want the geese to leave and only just a
couple of peo~le on Savage Lake that want them ~one.
Fahey pointed out the petition received to contiuue with the goose
management program. Fahey st~ted that the issue goes beyond Slvage
Lake, the problem is spread over the City.
Chester questioned wl~ether the City can I<eep u~ with the problem each
ye1r.
Morelan felt that after one yelr the progrlm has mlde a positive impact.
Morelan agreed tlte solution may be sliort-term, and indicated that he
would be interesYed in hearing of any better progra~ns that are out there.
However, there are definite nuisance issue with the ~eese. Morelan felt
the City must go forward with the goose mana~ement program.
Chester pointed out that dogs poop in the ~~arl<.
Fahey pointed out that the City l~as an ordii~ance requir-ing people to clean
up af~er their dogs. However, no one is responsible for cleaning up after
the geese. Falley felt it would be irresponsible for the City to ignore the
problem and wait for the results of a five-year study. In the meantime the
rest oFYhe citizens will be inconvenie~~ced and upset.
Scalze asked if there were public monies involved in the five-year study.
Scalze also asked why people do not tal<e e~gs fi~om nests now.
Hatfield responded that a permit is required to tal<e eggs from nests since
geese are migratory birds and are protected.
Scalze stlted that sl~e would be interested in looking at the results of this
program. Scalze also i~~dicated tl~at alternatives to tl~e [J of M's goose
management program should have been considered in Marclt. Scalze
pointed out that the egg progrlm is too late for this year, but suggested
that it be considered in the I'uture. Pahey and Morelan a~reed.
~s
