MiNUTES
CITY COUNCIL
OCTOBER 14, 1998
Wilzbacher explained the three-step certification program that was
completed by Lakeside Apartments this past August. On behalf of Sheriff
Bob Fletcher and the entire Ramsey County Sherift"s Department,
Wilzbacher presented the certification to Mary Alden, acceptin~ on behalf
of Lakeside Apartments. He thanked Lakeside for their efforts in making
Little Canada crime free.
Mayor Fahey thanked Lakeside Apartments and the Ramsey County
SherifF s Department for their efforts, indicating that the City of Little
Canada is proud to have the first certified multi-family housin~ unit in the
seven-city contract area.
Mary Alden indicated that Lakeside Apartments is proud to be first and
thanked Council Member Scalze and the City Administrator for their work
in putting together the Coalition of Multi-Housing Managers. Alden
indicated that Lakeside Apartments has had no problems with crime and
would like to keep it that way.
CONDITIONAL Mayor Fahey opened the Public Hearing to consider the application for a
USE PERMIT Conditional Use Permit for a Planned Unit Development or for a
FOR A PUD TO Preliminary Plat to reconfigure the property lines for the Schroeder
ALLOW A property as requested by Bally Total Fitness so that they can construct a
SECOND PYLON pylon si~n on an adjacent piece of property abutting Rice Street. Fahey
SIGN - pointed out that the Planning Commission has recommended approval of
BALLY TOTAL the Conditional Use Permit for a PUD contingent upon the square footage
FITNESS of the Bally sign being included in the total square footage for signage that
would be allowed for Outlot A at the time that it develops.
Pedersen asked the need for the second pylon.
Mike Muldo, Bally Total Fitness, reported that the sign is necessary to
identify the Bally's site from Rice Street. Muldo pointed out that the
current sign on Minnesota Avenue is very difficult to see. If Schroeder
Development Company develops their property along Rice Street, such
development will block the visibility of Bally's building from Rice Street.
Muldo also reported that they have signed a 10-year lease with Schroeder
Development Company as well as have done a$750,000 up~rade on the
building. Therefore, they would like to increase their exposure to Rice
Street.
There was no one from the general public present wishing to comment on
this matter.
