MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 24,1999
Sackett Glazer indicated that the Commission discussed trail len~th and it
was their thought that a short, practice-type of trail would be used in Little
Canada.
In light ofthe report provided by the Public Works Director, Bianchi
suggested that the Commission revisit this idea and formulate a clearer
recommendation. It was pointed out that nothing could be done for 1999,
therefore, there is time to develop this idea further.
The Council and Commission discussed the need for ~;reen space in
redeveloping the Rice Street/Little Canada Road area. Fahey informed the
Commission that this has been a difficult project. However, the Council is
sensitive to the need for green space and amenities.
Morelan pointed out the efforts to obtain green space along Round Lake,
and suggested that hopefully there will be more within the development
itself.
Smith indicated that there are grants for setting aside green space. Smith
offered to bring in a listing of the various grants that area available which
would include information on criteria which must be met for each grant.
The availability and use of grants was discussed, and the City
Administrator indicated that he has attended past informational sessions
on grants and has found that their focus is typically much narrower than
has been discussed this evening. However, the Administrator indicated
than he would take another look at the grant information to determine if
there are any additional grants the City should pursue.
Bianchi reported that she is in the process of planning the summer concert
schedule. This will be the third year for summer concerts, and as in the
past, she is planning four concerts, one for each Wednesday in July.
Bianchi reported that she has found that attendance is best at the family-
oriented concerts. Therefore, her proposal for this year is to schedule the
Roseville Area High School Jazz Band, the Teddy Bear Band, Hector and
the Gas Giants, and the Splatter Sisters. $1,000 has been budgeted for the
concerts. However, Bianchi reported that she wili need an additional $600
to schedule these four bands.
The Council discussed the additional funding and directed City staffto
approach the charities operating in the City seeking funding.
Anderson suggested the need to broaden the scope of the Commission
from strictly parks and recreation to include public art.
