MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 24, 1999
Bianchi reported that she obtained up to $6,000 in funding from NSYA,
however, the project costs came in at more than anticipated. The project
includes repaving of asphalt behind the school, an addition to the
play~round, four basketball standards, striping, drainage improvements,
benches, grading and resodding.
Fahey noted that the residents of the City will have primary use of this
facility during the summer months. Pahey agreed with the
Administrator's and Morelan's recollection of the funding of the
additional $2,620 for the project, and pointed out that the concern was that
the City was being asked to fund more of the project than the Roseville
School District was funding. Fahey pointed out, however, that the use of
the facilities by Little Canada residents will justify the additional dollars.
The Administrator pointed out that $8,620 has been allocated from 10%
Funds for this project.
Scalze supported that $8,620 from 10°/a Funds, but pointed out the City's
efforts to keep taxes down and the fact that the City does not easily spend
$2,600.
Smith indicated that any opportunity to give kids a place to recreate results
in less problems for a city. Sackett Glazer indicated that there is a high
demand for these basketball courts. The particular location of these courts
results in more use by residents.
It was the consensus of the Council to contribute the $8,620 for this
project from the 10% Fund.
Scalze thanked the Commission for the good job they have been doing,
noting that the Commission is very active as well as pro-active. Scalze
indicated that the Council appreciates the efforts ofthe Commission.
Fahey agreed.
Morelan agreed that the Commission is doing a goodjob for the City, but
suggested that he would like to see more focus on recreation
programming. Morelan asked the Commission to discuss ways to improve
existing programs as well as ideas for new problems.
Pedersen sug~ested that recreation pro~rams do not need to be restricted to
sports, and sug~ested art classes as an example of pro~rams that may be of
interest to residents.
Smith su~gested educational programs in Gervais Mill Park as another
possibility.
