1
Ben Harrington
From:
Sent:Tuesday, June 3, 2025 12:56 PM
To:Ben Harrington
Subject:Special Occupancy Permit for Lake Phalen Rowing
CauƟon: This email originated outside our organizaƟon; please use cauƟon.

Hello Ben,
I’m wriƟng in regard to the special applicaƟon for the Rowing club that was forwarded by the GLA.

As a Gervais lake resident I do not support the request for an excepƟon

In general I’m supporƟve of the rowing club and what they are trying to do, but the locaƟon and size of the club is an
issue.
As stated on their website and applicaƟon they are the Lake Phalen rowing club. That is where they should be rowing
and Phalen is the perfect lake since it does not allow motorized boats and has substanƟal public parking.

Listed below are a couple reasons I do not support the request for an excepƟon:

Organizing and training for 10+ boats (20+ people) at Ɵmes is a safety hazard on Edgerton with vehicles, kids and adults
(even if they park remotely) there is increased foot traffic which can be dangerous. On the lake is another issue.
The mulƟple boats take up the enƟre width of the lake and can be difficult to navigate (even on a slow pontoon ride).
The megaphone used by the coaches to communicate is a nuisance to those living on the lake.

The excepƟon only states 22 youth rowers, but their website states they have an adult program as well which doesn’t
seem to be included in the excepƟon.

As a business/club they have a goal to grow both youth and adult programs. At what point does it end? If this excepƟon
is granted we will be dealing with a lot more issues as the program conƟnues to expand. This excepƟon would open the
door to an indefinite number of rowers and boats.

With Lake Phalen being the perfect alternaƟve (and where they say they are based) it is logical that they run their
business from there instead of applying for an excepƟon to ordinances of LiƩle Canada that were established for a
reason.

Thank you for your Ɵme and sending out the noƟficaƟon to the GLA.

As a side note, I’m sure some members of the GLA would be willing to donate if the club needs help raising money to
move to Phalen.

Regards
