STAFF
REPORT
TO:Mayor Fischer and Members of City Council
FROM:Heidi Heller, City Clerk/HR Manager
Bill Dircks, Public Works Director
DATE:July 23, 2025
RE:Accept Resignation of Joe Steele
ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED:
Accept the resignation of full-time Public Works Supervisor Joe Steele.
BACKGROUND:
Joe Steele started with the city as a part-time Public Works employee in June 1979 and then
became a full-time Public Works employee on October 1, 1981. He was promoted to Public
Works Lead Man in 1989 and to Public Works Supervisor a few years later. He has submitted
his letter of resignation and retirement from the city effective August 8, 2025.
The city would like to thank Joe for his 46 years of service and dedication to Little Canada. He
was born and raised in Little Canada and has seen the city grow from a village to the nearly fully
developed city that it is today. Along the way there have been numerous growing pains for the
public works department and new responsibilities, staff, and equipment added as the city grew.
Joe helped the staff forge ahead and assisted in adding staff and equipment and implementing
new procedures and tasks. He was always ready for any emergency and performed any task
asked of him in order to help the city. He always took great care of the equipment and facilities
and kept a clean shop. He gave his entire career to the city and the city is grateful for all that he
did.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the Council accept the letter of resignation from Joe Steele effective August 8,
2025.
