MINUTES

Parks & Recreation Commission
December 3, 2009
Sanders commented that the material for the playground area needs to be improved to make
it handicapped and wheelchair accessible. He is highly recommending that a wood filler
product be used as it is very cost efficient in comparison to other playground materials.
Slain stated he would like to see the equipment as open as possible so there are no `hiding'
places for children for safety reasons. Steinwall inquired about all the equipment proposals
having only two swings. Morelan stated that is a typical number for this size area as the
swing has to be contained within the play area. They usually also have an infant swing with
most playground sets.
PIONEER PARK - CENTERVILLE ROAD ENTRANCE IMPROVEMENTS
Chair Fahey asked Sanders for more information about the recommended limestone planters.
Sanders stated they would have low walls and would be made fl•om limestone and placed in
different areas in the entrance area of Pioneer Park. Fahey asked if Sanders could provide
some sketches or pictures of examples of these type planters. Fahey stated she liked the idea
of having the plantings self-contained because of the poor soil in that area and the planters
would be easier to keep watered. Sanders replied that he could provide some pictures and
would also define where to put the planters for the next convnission meeting.
Steinert made a motion to make a recommendation to the City Council for 2010 funding in
an approximate range of $2,000 - $3,000 to build four limestone planters for the entrance of
Pioneer Park and to put dirt and flowers in the planters. Lolmaugh seconded the motion and
the motion carried.
Steinwall, Fahey and Sullivan discussed the possibility of having the commissioners
volunteer to help with putting the dirt and plantings into the planters.
OPTIONS FOR RECOGNITION OF LCRA
Morelan stated he has not ordered the approved plaque yet as he is struggling with the
wording for the plaque. He asked Slain to send him some suggested wording.
OTHER: The Winter Youth Activities Programs Registration Form was distributed to the
commissioners. Slain inquired about the 13abysitting Program. Morelan stated the city has
this program every two years and it is co-sponsored by the American Red Cross.
He stated that it is an excellent program as it also teaches safety along with the routine
babysitting supervision teachings.
Morelan stated that all commissioners were invited to attend the annual Council Christmas
Bvent being held at the city council chambers on Monday, December 28 starting at 4:30 pm.
