MINUThJS
CITY COUNCIL

JULY 14, 2010
The City Administrator reported that he would f nd out from John Moriarity,
Ramsey County, about the possibility of a donation to a food shelf.
Dan Sculley reported that there ai•e bucks and does on the property including
some trophy deer. Dan Sculley indicated that they would like the MBRB
limited to antlerless deer. The City Administrator indicated that the Sculley's
could set hunt parameters, noting that the MBRB was limited to antlerless deer
during the 2009 hunt.
John Sculley indicated that they would contact the DNR to obtain game
management tags and would apply for the maximum number of tags that they
would be allowed. After the Sculley hunt and depending on the number of deer
taken, John Sculley stated that a limit would be placed on the number of deer the
MBRB could take. John Sculley indicated that they do not want the deer herd
wiped out, but agreed that there are too many deer in the City. John Sculley
stated that he enjoys watching the deer.
John Sculley expressed concern that there will be people in the City questioning
why the Sculley family can conduct a hunt on their property while they cannot.
He noted that his family has a unique situation in that they own 30 acres of land.
John Sculley expressed concern about people trespassing and poaching on his
property and requested that a letter be went to his Maplewood neighbors
reminding them that the Sculley property is private property.
"I'he City Administrator agreed that the Sculley's would have to apply for DNR
management tags. He noted that there were 81 deer counted in the area of the
Sculley property and that was before fawns. Getting back to a herd of 20 in the
City would be a good goal. The Administrator indicated that he would work out
the specifics with the Sculley family and would present a plan to the Council for
action.
John Sculley again expressed concern about the reaction of some people to a
deer hunt on his family's property. Keis pointed out that some people will be
for the hunt and others will be against it.
Dan Sculley asked some specific questions regarding the Sculley family hunt,
and it was indicated that those details should be discussed with tihe City
Administrator, a plait worked out, and then presented to the Council for
approval. John Sculley again indicated that for the MBRB hunt the parameters
would include antlerless deer only as well as a limit on the number to be taken.
He again expressed concern with public perception. The City Administrator
pointed out that the Sculley property is unique and critical to the City's control
of the deer population and to resolve a community problem. John Sculley again
requested that abutting Maplewood residents be advised that the Sculley
property is private. Dan Sculley pointed out that in order to enforce trespassing
laws, the property would need to be posted. John Sculley suggested that the
4
