MINUTES

Parks & Recreation Commission
November 4, 2010
Sanders stated he has not researched how much this grading would cost but thought the City
would be paying the expenses for the grading. Maida asked if the money raised from the
Canadian Days Festival goes to the City. Beaudoin said the funds raised through their
charitable gambling and event sponsorships are used for expenses to put on the annual
festival, such as bands, parade, and rental of tents and equipment. "the City supports the
festival by paying a large portion of the (reworks expense and providing the grounds
maintenance crew dw•ing the festival. Beaudoin stated the Canadian Days Executive
Committee has discussed the project and is willing to look at possibly assisting in the
expense involved with the grading. Beaudoin continued on saying the committee has had to
cut their budget in certain areas the past couple of years because of the decline in gambling
funds and sponsorships due to the poor economy. In spite of that, many Canadian Days
events continue to thrive and attendance has grown annually at the Senior Appreciation
Event and the Car Show sponsored by Norm's "fire. The Canadian Days committee
continues to communicate and work with the Little Canada Recreation Association,
sponsors of the Kitten ball Tournament.
Sanders stated the next step would be to have the Canadian Days convnittee describe more
in detail the area they would like graded and he would check on the cost to complete the
project. Beaudoin responded saying she would have Gillis contact Sanders or Morela~i to
discuss this grading proposal in more detail.
OLD
BUSINESS NORTH/SOUTH TRAIL CONNECTION STATUS REPORT
Sanders reported he met with the National Park Service this week and the feasibility report is
almost complete for the North/South Trail Connection project. Sanders stated they will
meet again soon with the key players of the trail to gather additional suggestions and ideas.
They will then work to get the needed funding.
GRAFFITI ORDINANCE
Chair Fahey stated Morelan is working on the ordinance and with the City to incorporate it
with additional changes to the current city ordinances.
THUNDER BAY PARK BASKETBALL COURT & TRAIL STATUS
Sanders reported the park's drainage and trail improvements are being completed. He said
the soil conditions in the park were bad so they are applying a rock base to the trail to allow
settling over the winter and Chey plan to pave the trail in the spring. The drainage structure
has been completed and the park should have better drainage in the future.
At this time they are not color coating the basketball court, but that can possibly be done in
the future. They have paved the basketball court with regular asphalt.
