MINUTES <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />JANUARY 12, 2011 <br />2011 <br />APPOINT- <br />MENTS <br />Hromatka went on to describe in detail NYFS' highlights which include <br />opening of Discovery Center, efforts to improve efficiencies and enhance <br />programs, and serving younger children Challenges include the <br />tightening of the giving environment, reductions in revenues, remaining <br />true to the mission statement, and issues that are more severe presenting in <br />younger children. Hromatka stated that NYFS is looking toward the <br />future and exploring the role of community based non profits, providing <br />21 century skills with more focus on technology, and looking for more <br />diverse funding streams. Hromatka listed NYFS' partnerships which <br />include communities, school districts, collaborations, the faith community, <br />as well as businesses. <br />Hromatka thanked Little Canada for its continued support, noting that <br />Little Canada has partnership with NYFS since its inception. <br />Blesener asked about NYFS' efforts in directing children toward training <br />and continuing education beyond high school. Hromatka replied that <br />NYFS works with children to find their best potential, noting that <br />additional education and training is necessary after high school. He <br />pointed out that the Twin Cities is a sophisticated manufacturing area, <br />pointing out how manufacturing has changed and is more technology <br />based. <br />McGraw asked about the learning gap between minorities and white <br />students, and what NYFS is doing to help address this disparity. <br />Hromatka noted that children slide back somewhat over the summer <br />months if they are not involved in enrichment programs. NYFS is <br />providing these programs to give children opportunities over the summer <br />months. NYFS is trying to overcome barriers and give people hope. <br />There was additional discussion on the issue of younger children <br />presenting with mental health issues, and Hromatka was unsure if <br />problems are increasing in this age group or are being identified earlier. <br />He indicated that Hromatka is working with parents to help them be <br />successful, which will benefit these children. <br />I- Iromatka thanked the Council for the opportunity to address them this <br />evening. <br />Mr. Blesener introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2011 -1 -16 APPROVING THE FOLLOWING <br />APPOINTMENTS FOR THE CITY OF LITTLE CANADA FOR 2011: <br />4 <br />
