With regard to the amendment, staff is proposing that the usage of sick leave be expanded <br />to allow an employee to use his /her sick leave to care for parents. Currently, sick leave can be <br />used for the employee's own personal illness, as well as that of a spouse or a child. <br />Staff conducted a survey of surrounding communities (ten communities some of which had <br />"sick leave" and others "paid time off All cities surveyed allowed employees to use sick leave <br />for their parents (typically to accompany them to a doctor's appointment or to be with them <br />during surgery). <br />
