Sick Leave
SECTION 13 LEAVES WITH PAY
A. Sick leave is authorized absence from duty with pay, granted to all regular full -time and
regular part -time employees, working a minimum of 20 hours per week on average,
projected over a calendar year based on anticipated demands of the position. Sick leave
is not a privilege for an employee to use at his /her discretion, but shall be allowed only
when the employee is too sick to work, and under the conditions explained below.
B. A regular full -time employee shall accumulate sick leave at a rate of one day per month.
Sick leave may be accumulated to a maximum of one hundred twenty (120) days.
C. Regular part-time employees, working a minimum of 20 hours per week on average
projected over a calendar year based on anticipated demands of the position, will
accumulate sick leave pro -rated based on actual hours worked in a month applied against
the rate of one day per month for a full -time employee, rounded to the nearest hourly
increment, not to exceed the full -time accrual rate.
D. Temporary and seasonal employees (full -time and part-time) shall not be entitled to sick
leave.
E. Sick leave shall not be earned by any employee during a leave of absence without pay,
suspension, layoff, or other off payroll status.
F. An employee who is entitled to the benefit of accrued sick leave pursuant to this section
and who is eligible to receive worker's compensation payments shall be granted accrued
sick leave pay only in the amount of the difference between the employee's regular salary
and the worker's compensation payments.
Employees who are absent from work and are being paid workers compensation
insurance benefits shall be considered to be working for the purpose of accumulating
additional vacation leave or sick leave for up to three (3) months of absence from work.
No sick leave or vacation benefits will be earned while receiving compensation payments
for time exceeding three (3) months.
G. Regular attendance at work is required of all employees as a condition of employment.
Repeated absence or tardiness from work, regardless of the reason, is considered by the
City as a failure to meet this obligation and is grounds for progressive discipline, up to
and including termination of employment.
In an effort to manage attendance within the City, an attendance guideline has been
established for sick time usage of 60 hours within a continuous I2 -month period.
Supervisors will monitor sick time usage by employees and take the appropriate
performance management steps to ensure consistent and appropriate usage.
2
