MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
April 7, 2011
Morelan commented that the A &W has sponsored this event with providing the root beer for
ice cream floats in the past, but they are closed, so other options, such as Culvers, will
probably be approached to assist with the sponsorship this year.
ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION
Morelan said the Arbor Day Celebration is scheduled this year for May 6th at 1:00 p.m. at
Spooner Park. The celebration is postponed one week because of the school closing at St.
John's School on Arbor Day, April 29, for the silent auction set -up. Morelan was asked by
Sullivan if it is always held at Spooner Park. Morelan replied that they have had it at
Pioneer Park in the past, but have found that it is much more convenient for the school
children to walk to Spooner Park. Sanders commented that they usually try to plant two
trees, usually oak trees, which are more hardy. Morelan stated that one tree each is adopted
by both the Little Canada Elementary School and the St. John's School students.
Sullivan noticed that the bark from the smaller trees in the parks have been badly damaged
by deer this winter. Morelan said he will have the trees inspected this spring.
STRIPING COUNTRY DRIVE FOR WALKERS /BIKERS
Morelan stated he will again discuss this with Lee Elfering, the City Engineer, now that the
snow has melted to measure the width of the street to see if there is adequate width to stripe
a walker /biker path.
Sanders commented that the project may also depend on whether Ramsey County has the
street scheduled for maintenance in the future.
Morelan said crosswalk striping is usually done on streets before school opens in the fall.
He said he will include this topic in the discussion with the City Council at the joint
workshop on April 13th at 6:30 p.m.
JOINT WORKSHOP WITH CITY COUNCIL & PARK & RECREATION
COMMISSION — April 13th
Sanders composed an agenda with four major topics of discussion for this meeting with the
City Council.
Topic #1 — Presentation and discussion of the feasibility study of the Troutbrook
Trail.
Topic #2 — Future trail and sidewalk connections with Country Drive, Little Canada
Road, Labore Road, Centerville Road, South Owasso Boulevard and the
NE woodland /wetland connection.
Topic #3 — Canadian Days request to expand /grade the carnival space
Topic #4 - Maintenance and replacement of park play areas
Page 2 of 5
