MINUTES <br />Parks & Recreation Commission <br />April 7, 2011 <br />Sanders commented on the Trail /Sidewalk topic. He said there is an abundance of trees and <br />utility lines causing a challenge along L,abore Road to widen the street or add a trail along <br />that street. He commented that Centerville Road was not in very good shape. Morelan <br />agreed that Centerville Road has heavy walking usage by residents from Montreal Courts <br />going to Little Canada Road. Sanders commented he would like to discuss with the Council <br />future plans for completing the tie -in with the Waterworks Trail. For the NE woodland area, <br />Gervais Woods area, Sanders stated they would like to preserve as much of the natural <br />vegetation as possible in designing a trail in that area. Fahey commented that nine of the <br />eleven lots in the Gervais Woods development have been sold. <br />Morelan suggested having the next Park & Recreation Commission meeting, scheduled for <br />May 5, start with a park tour at Spooner Park at 6:00 p.m. with the business meeting at city <br />hall at 7:30 p.m. He stated he would invite a representative from the Canadian Days <br />Committee to meet there at that time, also, to illustrate to the Commissioners their intentions <br />for the grading of the carnival area. Sullivan voiced her concern that any changes with <br />grading should not destroy, ruin or deteriorate from the natural beauty of the park area. <br />Sanders continued stating that he would like to ensure the Council is supportive of the need <br />for ongoing maintenance with the signage and equipment in the parks. Maida asked if there <br />would be future budget cuts in the parks and recreation funds because of the loss of LGA <br />funds to the city. Morelan asked Sanders to include that question on the meeting agenda <br />with the City Council. Morelan commented that last year the skating park on Demont <br />Avenue was closed because of cuts in the budget. He stated there is not much for recreation <br />for the youth in that area and he was opposed to the closing of this ice rink. <br />Sullivan asked if the Thunder Bay Park was to be completed this year. Morelan responded <br />to say that the trail and 1/2 basketball court should be finished this summer. Sanders said it <br />was delayed because of the wet fall weather. Sullivan asked if the youth group who <br />suggested the basketball court idea would be contacted for a ceremony once the basketball <br />court was completed. Morelan stated he would contact the instructor to discuss that topic. <br />OTHER Morelan invited all the commissioners to attend this month's Marketplace Morning Talk on <br />Wednesday, April 13 on "Container Gardening ". <br />Morelan said the city will be having a weekly farmer's market at the AMF Bowling parking <br />lot starting on June 20 through September 26, 2011. The manager of the Mayfield Senior <br />Living Center has volunteered to assist with this weekly market. Morelan stated he and Katie <br />McGinnity attended a conference in St. Cloud recently on Farmer's Markets. City staff is <br />currently finalizing the by -laws, rules and regulations for the application forms. Morelan <br />commented that they have received assistance in designing these forms from the City of <br />Shoreview. <br />Morelan said the application will include the products they will be selling in their booth. <br />They are limiting sellers to anywhere in the State of Minnesota, and within a 50 mile radius <br />Page 3 of 5 <br />
