MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
February 3, 2011
NEIGHBORHOOD PARK SUGGESTED FOR NADEAU & COUNTRY DRIVE &
CONDIT AREA
Morelan reported the owner on the corner of Yorkton Blvd & Condit Streets wants to sell his
home. Morelan said the lot could be split with the home in the front of the property and use
the back lot for a neighborhood park. Part of the back lot has a wooded area with pine trees.
Morelan stated the property owner would like to sell the total property piece, 180' x 313', for
around $400,000. He thought this would be a costly piece of property, especially since the
house facing east on Condit would also need to be demolished. Sanders showed the location
of the property to the commissioners on a large map. Morelan said he called a resident, Tony
Mans, from that area for his comments on the suggested park. Mans stated he thought it
would not be an adequate park location because children would cut across yards to gain
access to the park. Mans stated he thought any park funding should be spent on improving
the trails in this area. He did not think this area was well suited for a neighborhood park.
Sanders stated there was a surprising number of homes in that area but agreed that this
property for sale was not a good fit for a park. He said there was also a vacant property lot for
sale in that area but he did not think either land parcel was large enough for a neighborhood
park. He also did not think there was funding available to develop a park in this area.
Morelan and the commissioners agreed there was probably not enough demand or interest for
a park in this area of the city.
LCRA SUBSIDIZING PROGRAM FEES
Morelan presented the 2011 program fees and reported the Little Canada Recreation
Association would again like to subsidize 20% of the fees that the city charges for youth
activities and any approved scholarships for 2011. Morelan projects that around $6500.00
would be given to the city to financially assist with these 2011 youth programs and
scholarships, based on figures from previous years' participation in each program. Slain
commented that the scholarship program provides for some kids to be enrolled in these
programs where they otherwise would not be able to attend because of their family financial
situation. Morelan stated the LCRA has financially assisted with these programs for the past
eighteen years.
Steinert made a motion to approve the program fees as presented. The motion was seconded
by Slain and the motion carried.
OTHER
Morelan invited all the commissioners to attend this month's Marketplace Morning Talk
session on Wednesday, Febraury 9 at 9:30 a.m. Dr. Don Erickson will be speaking about
Dental Care — Healthy Teeth and Gums.
