MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
February 3, 2011
TROUTBROOK TRAIL CONNECTION DISCUSSION
Morelan stated there was nothing new to report and Sanders said he had corrected the typing
errors from the report given to the commissioners at the last meeting. Maida asked if a City
of Little Canada logo could be put on the cover or first page of the report. Sanders stated
that the Troutbrook Trail runs through other cities also, such as Maplewood, and was not
just a City of Little Canada project.
Maida also suggested that Sanders reference pages to tab to continue a topic of discussion.
Sanders agreed that was a good suggestion and would make necessary changes.
Sanders stated the Ramsey County Bikes and Trails Committee has assigned a couple
members to keep in touch with this project once the project is turned over to Ramsey County
Parks.
OTHER STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION REPORT
The City's Goal Setting Session was held on Tuesday, February 1, 2011. Commission Chair
Linda Fahey and Commissioner Ruth Steinwall, along with Jim Morelan, Park & Recreation
Director, were in attendance for the workshop. Morelan reported that seven of the 28 goals
that were presented were Park & Recreation related. Some of these included reopening the
Demont Ice Rink, planting flowers /perennials around city welcome signs, adding flowers at
Pioneer Park, defining a replacement schedule in the city's Capital Improvements Budget for
playground enhancements. Slain commented that he thought some park facilities needed to
upgraded now and Morelan agreed that once the playground equipment becomes outdated the
park loses popularity with the residents.
Sullivan noted that she likes the suggested 2011 goal of conducting another city survey of
both residents and business owners. Morelan said the last time they did a city -wide survey
that 400 people were randomly selected to respond to a 20 minute phone question /answer
session.
RICE STREET & HIGHWAY 36 INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS
Sanders displayed a map with the improvements on the Rice Street /Highway 36 intersection.
He commented that a Park & Ride was again being discussed on the north side of County
Road B and Rice Street in the current wooded area across from Cub Foods. The project had
been delayed because of the intersection traffic problems in the past, but the traffic problems
at that intersection have been addressed now with the new street improvements directing
traffic to the north side of Highway 36.
