MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRIL 13, 2011
FUTURE
TRAIL &
SIDEWALK
CONNECTIONS
COUNTRY
DRIVE
Keis asked if someone asked Sanders to undertake this project. Sanders
replied that the project was originally started by Little Canada and is now
supported by Maplewood. At this time it is a joint undertaking between
the two cities. McGraw asked if costs are being funded by both cities.
Sanders replied that they are. McGraw asked if there was a formal cost -
sharing agreement between the two cities. Sanders replied that there was
not. McGraw felt such an agreement should be put in place. Sanders
stated that he was not sure what the next few years would bring given
economic conditions. He indicated, however that it is good to have
projects like this one ready to go.
Sanders reported that a resident approached the Commission about
striping a shoulder on Country Drive for walkers. It appears there is
adequate width to do so, and the City Engineer will be putting together
cost estimates for this work. Tying the project in with other street striping
should minimize the cost.
Blesener suggested the Water Works Trail as an alternate route. Sanders
reported that walkers from the manufactured home park to Little Canada
Road prefer the most direct route.
Boss suggested striping the entire length of Country Drive for walkers.
Sanders replied that he could have the City Engineer look at that cost as
well.
Keis asked if the driving lanes would be moved over. Sanders did not
think it would be necessary to shift the centerline of the street. McGraw
noted that the area along the curve would be dangerous for walkers if the
centerline is not moved over. The Parks & Rec Director indicated that the
City Engineer can take a look at the curve to ensure that there is enough
room from a safety standpoint. He noted that no measurements have been
taken yet.
Keis asked if a cost /benefit analysis has be done for the striping project,
pointing out that it should be determined if there are enough walkers to
justify the project. The Director replied that one has not been done.
Maida pointed out that couple of the Commission members know this is a
heavily walked area. He pointed out the value of improved safety.
Boss asked if consideration had been given to a sidewalk rather than
striping a shoulder on the pavement. Sanders replied that a sidewalk has
not been considered on Country Drive, noting some grade issues.
3
