MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 5, 2011
said he stops there occasionally to visit with the children who are using the skate board park.
On the whole, he said there have been very few problems, with Chair Fahey adding there has
been no graffitti or serious vandalism. Morelan commented that one piece of equipment
was missing, which has been replaced. Sanders asked Morelan the condition of the concrete
surface. Morelan replied that it was holding up very well but might need some joint sealing
this summer.
Vice Chair Steinwall told the commissioners that this would be her last meeting as she has
moved to Roseville and is resigning as a Park & Recreation Commissioner. She commented
that she has thoroughly enjoyed serving as a commissioner for almost five years. Chair
Fahey thanked her for her service on the board and for her contributions given to the
community. Morelan stated Steinwall has been a real positive addition to the Parks &
Recreation Commission.
Maida suggested the commissioners consider putting some equipment in the city parks for
adults that are made by Landscape Structures. For example, a cardio stair stepper, all
structures that are designed for adult fitness. Sanders added that Europe had this type of
equipment in many parks. He thought there was a lot of merit to the equipment and thought
it would be a good idea for the commission to look into for our city parks. Maida also said
there is a Steve King Foundation to help prevent child obesity that has grant funds available
to purchase this type of equipment. Maida stated the City of St. Paul was given twelve pieces
of adult fitness equipment through this grant program.
Morelan thought the adult park equipment could be added along the side of the playgrounds
as an addition to the kid's equipment. Steinwall added that Lake Bennett Park had them in
the past, but the equipment was made out of wood, and the wood rotted over the years.
Maida inquired as to the procedure of filling the vacancy on the commission. Morelan said
he would discuss this with the City Administrator and City Council. Chair Fahey said the
position of Vice Chair would also be vacant and asked that they elect a commissioner for that
position at next month's meeting.
ADJOURN Upon motion by Steinert, seconded by Slain, the meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Dotty Norgard
Recording Secretary
