MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 5, 2011
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Morelan reported that Steinert will again chair the Ice Cream Social event to be held in
conjunction with Canadian Days on Thursday, July 28th in the lower shelter area of Spooner
Park. The program will again be put on by the Ramsey County Canine Unit, the Roseville
Puppet Wagon, and the Little Canada Fire Department, each one having a twenty minute
presentation. Clowns will also be there to entertain the youth, along with serving the
refreshment of root beer floats.
Since the previous supplier of the root beer was A &W and it has closed, other options such
as Culvers will be approached to assist with the sponsorship this year.
ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION
Morelan said the Arbor Day Celebration is scheduled for May 6th at 1:00 p.m. at Spooner
Park's Lower Shelter area. Morelan distributed a copy of the Arbor Day program. Mayor
Blesener will be giving the welcome and Bill Sanders will be giving the Arbor Day address.
Songs will be sung by the 3 "d grade class from St. John's school and the 4th grade class from
LC Elementary School. Also attending will be the Kindergarten class from the Little Canada
School and the 1st grade class from St. John's School. Morelan will give the closing
remarks. Following the ceremony two trees will be planted, followed by refreshments.
Morelan said that one tree each is adopted by the Little Canada Elementary School and the
St. John's School students. Students are asked to water them if they see they need watering.
Morelan stated the deer killed the trees that were planted last year and the parks employees
have replanted new trees. Morelan said the parks department has purchased tree coverings
for future winters to protect the young trees from damage. Sanders commented that the trees
planted in prior years, hybrid elms, have shown some nice growth. He also said most of the
trees in the previous years for Arbor Day have been oaks. Morelan said the city has been
sponsoring this Arbor Day Celebration for about twenty years.
Chair Fahey asked if they have ever buried a time capsule in conjunction with this event.
Morelan replied that the Historical Society has buried one on the city hall property, but no
time capsule has ever been placed in any city park.
OTHER Morelan invited all the commissioners to attend this month's Marketplace Morning Talk on
Wednesday, May 11 on "Leisure Time with Grandkids ".
Morelan stated registration for all the summer activities are close to being completed. A new
flyer with archery lessons, firearm safety and the new skateboard camp registrations are now
available and flyers were distributed to the schools.
Maida reported seeing children jumping off the park shed, onto the picnic table and then to
the ground in the skate park area. Morelan replied that he has never seen that being done, but
Page 3 of 4
