MINUTES PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION SEPTEMBER 1, 2011 PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT REPLACEMENT PROGRAM Maida noted that Canadian Days' original request was to flatten the hill, and indicated surprise at the host of other options being presented. The Director noted that these options came up at the workshop meeting with the Council. Fahey again pointed out that at the workshop meeting Canadian Days indicated that in addition to having more room for the car show, they would like to add vendors at the Celebration to gain additional revenue. Maida asked if the options were prioritized and costs identified. Sanders indicated that the various options were identified at the workshop and they need further study. He suggested that the Commission review the options further, and then have a meeting with Canadian Days within the next couple of months. He indicated that it would not be possible to complete any work in the park in time for the 2012 Canadian Days Celebration. The Director asked that Sanders put some sketches together for the Commission to review. Sanders stated that he would like to walk the wooded area on the west of the park and locate the important trees to make sure it is feasible to move into that western area. Sanders stated that he would have some sketches available to review at the next meeting. The Director indicated that once the Commission reviews this information, representatives from Canadian Days would be invited to meet with the Commission. Sullivan pointed out that there is a lot of buckthorn and scrub material in the western edge of the park, and was not sure there were many good trees. She stated that she supported moving into that western area noting that it appears to be fairly flat. Improving that area would also result in improving the visibility of the park at the corner of Centerville Road and Eli Road. She indicated that there would be signage and plantings at the corner resulting in a nice entrance area. The Director felt that the western wooded area was an important feature of the park and indicated that he would not want to see it completely disappear. There is also a lot of wildlife living in those woods. Additional discussion will occur at the next meeting and Sanders will have sketch plans prepared for review at that meeting. The Director reported that several years ago the City had a playground replacement schedule prepared by Landscape Structures. He indicated that he would contact the vendor to have this plan updated. Maida suggested that any updates include adult fitness equipment. It was noted that Landscape Structures provides equipment for both adult and children. The Director indicated that in addition to suggested additions /replacement 3
