MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
SEPTEMBER 1, 2011
to see the rink reopened noting that this was a recreational venue for the
west side of the freeway.
Maida asked the cost of running the Demont rink. The Director was not
sure of the cost, but estimated it at $8,000 to $10,000 per season. He
indicated that costs include having an employee present to supervise the
warming house /rink when it is open as well as flooding and maintenance
costs. Maida asked if the rink could be operated utilizing volunteers. The
Commission felt it might be difficult to get volunteers out during the early
morning hours of winter to maintain and flood the ice.
Lolmaugh asked how long the rink has been closed. The Director replied
that it was closed last season due to budgetary concerns.
Maida asked if the Little Canada Recreation Association could be
approached to pay for the maintenance and operation of the rink. Sullivan
pointed out that this is an on -going operational cost and LCRA donations
are typically project- driven.
Fahey asked the condition of the warming house and rink. The Director
replied that it is in good condition.
Maida suggested reopening the rink with reduced hours in order to keep
costs down. The Director pointed out that maintenance and flooding costs
would remain the same, and that limited hours would be the times that the
warming house is open. The Director also suggested that some
consideration could be given to rotating warming house hours between the
Old Fire Hall rink and the Demont rink.
Slain recommended that the City Council consider the reopening of the
Demont rink for the 2011/2012 season with consideration being given to
the possibility of scaling back hours that the Demont warming house is
open or rotating hours between the Old Fire Hall and Demont rinks.
Motion seconded by Heikke.
Motion carried 6 — 0.
CAPITAL The Director suggested that the Commission give some thought to
IMPROVEMENT capital improvement needs prior to its next meeting. A list will then be
NEEDS /PROCESS compiled and presented to the Council as part of its capital improvement
planning process.
5
