ATTACHMENT C
July 16, 2008
To: Joel Hanson, City Administrator, and Little Canada City Council
From: Jim Lee, Fire Marshal
Re: Fire Inspection Program
F am proposing an upgrade to the fire inspection program for the City of Little Canada.
This program would inspect some businesses annually based on occupancy and several
other factors. There are approximately 86 annual business inspections. There are 25
annual apartment complex inspections and at least 7 townhouse annual inspections.
Approximately 118 annual inspections, schools, churches and places of assembly are not
accounted for in this number.
There are approximately 284 businesses remaining businesses. These inspections would
be done in the following manner 142 inspections done by the fire marshal's office
annually and 142 done on a self- inspection program annually. There will be roughly 260
total inspections done annually.
Businesses that do not return the self-inspection form will receive a second letter, if there
is no response from the business an on site inspection will be required. Because it is
unknown how businesses will react to a new program initially it is difficult to accurately
determine the total number of inspections required.
The number of annual and self-inspections will also vary depending on new businesses
and change of use of existing businesses in the community. Every inspection will require
documentation of the inspection to be kept 011 file. All fire code violations must have an
on -site reinspeetion to verify compliance.
I was unable to calculate the exact number of inspections that need to take place because
there is no accurate way to track businesses in the city at this time.
9
