I -Iere is a listing of items with background material (as noted) for your review:
Holiday Decorations on Little Canada Road:
There was some interest in possibly decorating Little Canada Road with lights for the holiday season.
In order to accomplish this the light poles on Little Canada Road would have to have electrical outlets
on them to plug in the lights. Unfortunately, when the light poles were installed in 2000 the council
opted against adding the electrical outlets due to the cost. At the time the City had a quote from Xcel
Energy of $8960 to install electrical outlets on 28 of the streetlights. That was broken down to $6300
for the electrical circuit wiring of Little Canada Road and $95 for each outlet. Xcel also stated that the
cost to retrofit outlets after the streetlights were installed would be at least two times as expensive. We
would also need mounting brackets for supporting the decorations themselves.
Little Canada Road has 43 lights from Rice Street to County Road C. I believe a few lights were removed a
year or two after the project. The 28 lights that were discussed originally were probably half but are now
slightly more than half. Based on the layout of the lights I would think if the council wanted to consider
decorating about 23 light poles we would have good coverage.
Staff checked out a couple of different holiday decoration web sites and found some rough pricing for variou
decorations. According to the information provided on the web sites a ballpark figure per decoration would 1
anywhere from $200 to $800. If we assume an average price of $400 per decoration plus the electrical
retrofitting and brackets for 23 poles, we would estimate it would take a budget of $ 25,000.
Another option may be strings of lights. They cost about $1.50 per foot, so if we put 20 feet of lights on 43
poles the cost would be about $1300 plus the electrical retrofit. Some examples of decorations and pricing
will be available for review at Wednesday's meeting.
1
