MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
NOVEMBER 3, 2011
COUNTRY
DRIVE
park behind their booths. Nelson asked about the dumpster that is
currently tucked into this wooded area. The Parks & Rec Director
indicated that the dumpster could be moved hack further into the
remaining wooded area.
Sanders also noted that in his diagram he is proposing a wood chip trail
system through this wooded area and is also suggesting that some
replanting and reforestation take place in the woods. He noted that there
were about 220 cars in the 2011 Canadian Days car show. Under the
diagram he put together, there would be space for approximately 250 cars
as well as additional vendor space. Sanders noted that this proposal does
not propose any regrading of the lower area of the park.
Nelson asked where the old house foundation was located. Sanders noted
its general location in the wooded area. The Director reported that the
Historical Society has very little information on this foundation. He
discussed its history with Don Gagne, who was familiar with a family that
had lived in the house at one time. The Director and Sanders indicated
that additional research would be done on the property, but it was
suggested that the foundation may have little historical value.
Fahey asked if Canadian Days was still interested in the regrading option
in light of the proposal presented this evening. Nelson stated that
eventually they would like to see the regrading as the carnival would like
additional flat space in order to bring in larger rides. Fahey pointed out
that at this point the support was for the clearing of some of the wooded
area on the western edge of the park given the cost as well as the fact that
this option would provide Canadian Days with additional usable space for
its 2012 Celebration. Connelly stated that Canadian Days would likely be
interested in having this additional space as proposed. She indicated that
the proposal would be brought to the Canadian Days Committee for
action at its meeting next week The Commission discussed its next step
and the consensus was that after it hears formally from Canadian Days,
cost estimates for the clearing work would be put together and those
would be presented to the Council for action at its December meeting.
The Director felt the option presented by Sanders this evening was
preferable to filling and grading the lower area of Spooner Park. 1 -le noted
that the rolling hills give character to the park.
Sanders asked that discussion of this item be tabled at this time. He
indicated that he would be discussing cost estimates and development
2
