7/Z' Waaaa
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048
www. ci.little- canada. mn. us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener, Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel R. Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: April 5, 2007
RE: 2007 Canadian Days Fireworks Contract
MAYOR
6i11 Blesener
COUNCIL
Rick Montour
Barbara Allan
John Keis
Michael McGraw
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
As you know, the City contracts for the fireworks display at Canadian Days in order to ensure we
have the proper insurance coverage from the City's perspective. (The vendor has to provide
$5,000,000 of coverage, but we also have the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust (LMCIT)
waive the fireworks exclusion given the event occurs on city /school district property.
We solicited quotes from four Vendors for a $7,500 display with $6,500 coming from our 10% fund
and $1000 from Canadian Days. Chuck Pechmann of Canadian Days reviewed the quotations and
recommended we retain RES Specialty Pyrotechnics as the company for this year's event. (This is
the same firm who did last year's celebration and their display was excellent.)
There is also an opportunity to lock in a multiyear contract with 11% additional fireworks for each
year that will essentially keep the show at the same level for the duration of the contract. While this
sounds like a good value, I can not determine if we are truly getting 11% more value versus requiting
the shoot each year.
Subject to your thoughts on the multiyear contract, staff recommends we contract with RES for the
2007 Canadian Days Fireworks Display.
