opening, in the case of a shear wall causes any excessive defection to the building walls
and roof or in the case of a fire wall, the opening may have to be protected by materials
offering an equivalent rating.
Corrective Action: MSBC Section 1311.0411 Section 411 Due to the changes made to the
original building, a registered design professional must be consulted to evaluate the structural
members in the roof, walls and newly constructed additions. If structural members are found to be
unsormd or dangerous the design professional shall indicate how the structural members will be
repaired or replaced while complying with applicable laws and regulations. An architect shall
submit a scaled floor plan showing area, height, wall sections and have a code summary. Permits
and approvals must be given by the code official before any work is started.
This building appears to be structurally unsafe due to overloading, appendages built, and the
altering of certain bracing members.
Inside Storage Rooms- MSBC 1300.0120 Several rooms have been added to the inside
of the building sometime after the original building was erected. There is no record of
any approvals given for the construction of these additions and inspections have not been
done to insure they have been constructed in compliance with the building code in
existence at the time. The storage in the rooms is not neat and orderly and storage of
automobile parts has been placed on top of the rooms increasing the chance of partial or
total collapse.
Corrective Action: Section 1300.0120 and 1300.0130 of the Minnesota State Building Code
requires a permit for the construction or alteration of a building or structure. To obtain a permit,
an application form must be completely filled out accompanied by two sets of construction
documents signed by a registered professional which shows the work conforms to current codes
and regulations. If the work satisfies all the code requirements and applicable laws and ordinances,
the building official shall issue a permit.
Outside Additions- MSBC 1300.0120 Three additions have been built onto the
building, two on the south side and one on the north, without obtaining the proper
approvals from the building official. The structural support for the roof is questionable
and there is no visible evidence that a foundation exists. The additions have been bolted
to the original building walls at the roof wall intersection. The building frame system and
their corresponding connectors appear to be undersized for the live and dead loads placed
upon the supporting structure and show signs of sagging due to faulty construction.
Anchorage of the roof to walls and columns, and of walls and columns to
foundations shall be provided to resist uplift and sliding forces and to provide a
continuous load path to the foundation. Footings and foundations are required to be
constructed on undisturbed soils and be designed to be placed onto soils having the
proper load- bearing value.
Flashings are missing at the intersection where the metal roofs meet the wall
causing wind driven rain and snow to flow between the building and additions.
- 2 3 -
