MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JUNE 27, 2007
would then red tag the new garage until the remodeling project is
complete.
Blesener suggested that a third option might be for Mr. French to obtain an
easement from his neighbor to the north and share his existing curb cut. A
new driveway on the north side of the property could be extended from
this existing curb cut location.
French preferred not to have to ask his neighbor for an easement to share
his curb cut. He noted that the driveway as he has proposed it would abut
his neighbor's driveway on the north for only a short distance. French felt
that moving the entire driveway to the north side of the property adjacent
to his neighbor's property would cause problems with snow storage.
Blesener noted that the shared curb cut would eliminate one curb cut along
Edgerton Street. He also noted that moving the driveway to the north side
of the property would eliminate driveway area across the French front
yard.
French felt that moving the driveway to the north side of the property
would add considerable cost to the project, given the need to remove the
perfectly good concrete from his existing driveway.
Blesener noted that Mr. French is requesting a new garage, and typically a
new driveway is needed to access a new garage.
French pointed out that there are a variety of driveway styles that existing
along Edgerton Street, some long, some short, some with huge turn-
arounds. French pointed out that he has two large trees on his property
that would provide screening for the driveway as he has proposed it. He
felt the driveway would be barely visible from Edgerton Street. French
again raised the snow storage issue should his driveway be located entirely
on the north side of his property. French reported that he is trying to
construct his project as economically as possible, and felt that requiring
him to tear out his existing concrete driveway would add a big cost to the
project.
Allan felt the proposal as submitted added an extreme amount of asphalt to
the property, and felt sharing the curb cut with the neighbor to the north
was preferable. Allan also indicated that she could support swinging the
existing driveway around the south end of the French home.
French again pointed out the three foot drop in grade and the resulting
need for a retaining wall on the south side of the house. French indicated
that the project as he has proposed it is acceptable to his neighbors, and
8
