MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
FEBRUARY 9, 2012
In response to the open -ended nature of the hearing notice, Duray
indicated that the City would be very specific in the type of storage that
might be granted a Variance, i.e. one boat with trailer, one utility trailer,
and wood pile of a certain size.
Roberto again asked about the seasonal nature of the boat. The City
Planner pointed out that the code allows for this type of storage on a
seasonal basis on driveway in a front yard. The Planner indicated that the
intention of the applicant in his Variance request is that the storage would
be year -round and not seasonal.
Roberto did not feel the Variance request was reasonable, again indicating
that the slope on the side of the house does not preclude access to the
backyard.
Duray pointed out that the applicant would like to store up to 6 cords of
wood and the Planner is recommending a maximum of 2 cords. Duray
suggested a compromise of a 4 cord maximum.
Roberto noted that Anderson has driveway parking that is 2 to 3 stalls
wide and suggested that parking the boat with trailer and utility trailer was
a feasible option. Roberto presented some pictures of the Anderson
property and noted that it is apparent from the pictures it is possible to
access the Anderson backyard. Roberto felt that the City Code should be
complied with and Anderson should be required to store in his backyard.
Roberto again stated that he did not support the Variance.
Hall asked about the information Roberto sent to the City Administrator
and asked if he had any comments relative to the Administrator's
response. Roberto pointed out that this information related to unimproved
Rose Lane, and was not related to the Variance request.
Roberto again expressed concern with the open - endedness of the hearing
notice. He was also concerned that the items that Anderson is requesting
to store in the front yard were more appropriate for backyard storage.
Roberto pointed out the second photo he provided which shows how
Anderson previously stored items in his yard, indicating that currently
only the wood pile is being stored.
The City Planner indicated that the hearing notice was worded broadly
with the intention that the Commission and City Council would narrow the
specifics of the request at their meetings. The Planner also noted that his
recommendation identifies the specific items to be stored, i.e., boat with
trailer, utility trailer, and firewood. The Planner stated that he is not
recommending approval of any other items to be stored other than these
-8-
