MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
MARCH 1, 2012
25 years old and is sound, but there are elements of the structure that are
deteriorating. He also suggested that the addition of bathrooms to the
warming house would be beneficial and would be useful for the
skateboard park as well. In order to move the warming house, the
Director indicated it would be necessary to purchase a piece of property
from St. John's Church, and reported that St. John's has a sliver of
property in this area that is platted separately that would work for a new
warming house. The pleasure rink is currently on a piece of property
being leased from St. John's Church, and the hockey rink on a piece being
leased from St. Paul Water.
The next goal is "Expand Aquatic Offerings — Gervais Beach ". The
Director stated that the City could possibly offer swimming lessons at the
beach, which it did a number of years ago. He indicated that most
swimming lessons are offered at pools. Fahey noted the differences in
swimming in a lake versus a pool and felt lake swimming lessons was a
good idea. Sullivan noted that Joe's Sporting Goods holds some
demonstrations, etc. at Gervais Beach. It was suggested that perhaps
Joe's or another entity could be contacted to determine if a cooperative
venture could be offered.
The Director noted the goal of "Televising Parks & Recreation
Commission meetings ". Some Commissioners expressed a disinterest
while others seemed interested. There was also concern with the cost
involved with the suggestions that the Cable TV dollars that would be
used could go toward other purposes. The Director suggested that the
Commission discuss this with the Council at an upcoming workshop.
The next goal was "Evaluate replacement of Spooner Park lower shelter ".
The Director reported that the upper shelter at Spooner Park is very
popular and another facility similar in nature (larger size, bathrooms,
serving area) would be an asset to the park. The Director pointed out the
need to run sewer and water to the lower shelter area, but indicated that it
may be possible to tap into the Metro Sewer line that runs along the ditch
area. He also suggested that another location for a shelter similar to the
Spooner Park upper shelter may also be an option.
TRAIL Sullivan asked if the City was resubmitting for a trail grant to complete
GRANT the Water Works Trail connection. The Director replied that that is a
possibility, although questioned the availability of grant funds. The
Director reported that the City has obtained an extension from the railroad
to complete the trail crossing. The Director indicated that it may just
come down to the City funding the cost of this improvement.
FRIENDS
OF THE
The Director passed out a brochure advertising the Friends of the Park
Tree Sale that the City is helping to promote. The Director noted that
3
