Project limits (if known) Beginning Mile Point Ending Mile Point
2. Brief Description of Location (Provide a map) :
Viking Drive is a frontage road on the north side of TH 36 and is located east of Rice Street. The
intersection of Viking Drive with Rice Street is approximately 200 feet north of the intersection of Rice Street
and the TH 36 westbound on /off ramp.
Description of Project Worktype :
The proposed project would reroute approximately the west 550 feet of Viking Drive. This will eliminate the
intersection of Viking Drive with Rice Street and direct Viking Drive onto Minnesota Avenue where access
can be gained to Rice Street via the existing signalized intersection. Property acquisition for the project
would include two residential properties, a Citco gas station, and some land swapping with a McDonald's
restaurant property. At this time both residential properties are for sale and the gas station has indicated a
willingness to sell. McDonald's is in the process of rebuilding their restaurant and recognizes the benefit of
the land swapping and is will to utilize a new restaurant and site layout to work with the City to achieve the
rerouting.
Y
a
°-'
W
Regional Significance Route Category:
❑ Farm to market artery
IN Part of 10 -ton route system
plan ❑ Serves as a regional tourist destination
• Part of an economic development
® Provides capacity or congestion relief to I Is a connection to the IRC system, trunk
a parallel trunk highway system highway or a county road
or county road
Effectiveness of the project in eliminating a transportation system deficiency:
This project will eliminate an unsignalized intersection that exists in close proximity to the Rice Street/TH 36
interchange. The City and other agencies have been attempting to begin the process of redesign and
construction of a new Rice Street bridge and interchange system for TH 36. The close proximity of this
intersection to the ramps will have to be dealt with when improvements are made to the bridge and
interchange. The elimination of the gas station and the revised site layout for McDonald's would also
eliminate two driveway access points onto Rice Street resulting in no accesses onto the east side of Rice
Street between Minnesota Avenue and the westbound TH 36 ramps.
Project's contribution to other local regional, or state economic developments or redevelopment efforts:
Metro Transit was pursuing a Park and Ride facility on the east side of Rice Street between TH 36 and
County Road B. This project was delayed due to the projected increase in traffic levels at an already poorly
operating Rice Street bridge and TH 36 interchange system. The Park and Ride project at that location will
not move forward until the bridge and interchange is rebuilt to accommodate traffic levels. The rerouting of
Viking Drive is the first step in achieving this. - 3 -
R/9 9 /2nnR
