515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766-4048
www.cilittle-canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
To: Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
From: Bill Dircks, Public Works Superintendent
Date: December 13, 2006
Re: Uniform Policy
MAYOR
Bill Btesener
COUNCIL,
Jim LaValle
Rick Montour
Barbara Allan
John Keis
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
The City discontinued its contract with Aramark Services on December 18 due to poor
service and the diminished need for such services. The Public Works staff has decided to
purchase their own uniform pants and care for them themselves. Staff will pay each
employee an allowance equal to the $3.90 per week the uniform contract charged. The
employees will be paid with a lump sum payment in the amount of $202.80 at the end of
each calendar year. Some employees have asked for an initial payment of $100 so that
they can purchase a few pairs of pants immediately for work use. Should the employee
leave prior to June 22 they will repay the City an amount equal to $3.90 times the number
of weeks not worked through June 22. Staff recommends that newly hired employees be
given this same option to ease the financial burden of purchasing work pants.
Attached is a draft copy of a proposed uniform policy to outline both the City's and the
employee's responsibility regarding uniform apparel. Other than the uniform pants the
rest of the items discussed in the policy have been in effect for a number of years. Staff
decided to incorporate the practices as a formal policy so that everyone is on the same
page regarding uniforms. The current policy has served the City well and has allowed the
City to keep up on the appearance of its employees while controlling costs. Staff
recommends that the Council approve the policy and also would recommend that the
policy be added to the Personnel Policy Manual.
