MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
May 4, 2006
TELEVISE The Director commented that the City Council would like the Commission to televise their
MEETINGS meetings on a trial basis in order to give residents more access to the government. The
Commission was not in favor of this idea since they felt it would discourage candidates from
applying as commissioners and the Commission was fond of the informal nature of the
meetings. They felt that the city should advertise our web site more and noted that all of the
Commission's agendas and minutes are located there for the public to read.
iICE :CREAIVI"
I'SOCIAI%"
NEW
OFFICERS
The Commission was not convinced that the broadcast would increase public involvement.
They indicated that their group was non - policy - snaking and they did not think the draw would
be big enough to justify the broadcast. They were strongly opposed to this idea since there is no
pressing need. However, they did acknowledge that televising neighborhood meetings may be
helpful, but filming should not be done routinely.
The Commission suggested providing a tour of the parks on Cable Channel 16. This broadcast
could also be accessed by clicking on a link on our web site, similar to accessing the City
Council and Planning Commission meetings.
The Commission felt that the Ice Cream Social should be held again this year. The social
will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. just before Canadian Days. The
Commission suggested holding this gathering at Spooner Park's lower shelter similar to last
year's format. Steinert stated that he would be happy to coordinate this event on behalf of the
Commission.
Sackett Glaser stated that tonight's meeting will be her last since she is in the process of moving
to Maplewood. She commented that she has thoroughly enjoyed serving on the Commission the
past ten years and would like to continue receiving the Parks & Recreation Commission agendas
and minutes.
The Commission unanimously appointed Mans as chair and Gray as vice -chair due to Sackett
Glaser's resignation. The Commission thanked Sackett Glaser for her dedicated service the past
ten years.
ADJOURN Neis recommended that the meeting be adjourned.
Motion seconded by Davis.
Motion carried 6 — 0.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Kris Pechman
