Memo
.Ct IZA1NG - 11SSIJQ41T -1_S
TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of the City Council
FROM: Lee Eifering, City Engineer
DATE: April 21, 2005
RE:
2489 McMenemy Street
Installation of Storm Sewer Culvert
Drainage Improvements
The memo in the last council meeting packet summarized the drainage issue between
the properties at 2489 and 2481 McMenemy Street. As the memo indicated, quotes
were received to install approximately 275 feet of directionally drilled pipe from the street
to the west end of the 2489 property. The two contractors that quoted this work were as
follows:
MinnComm $ 9,257.50
Red Peterson Utilities $ 9,465.00
Due to the relatively high cost of drilling the pipe the entire length, we requested that
these two contractors supply a quote for a shorter 75 foot directional drill. This 75 foot
directional drill would start at the street and extend beyond the back of the house at
2481 McMenemy. From that point the water would flow overland to the west end of the
lot and eventually to the wetland to the south. If any ponding occurred between the pipe
outlet and the west end of the lot, City crews could construct a small swale along the
property line to ensure proper drainage. I have spoken to the property owner at 2481
regarding this option and he has indicated that it would be acceptable. At this time only
one of the contractors has supplied a quote for this shorter directional drill, which is
shown below:
MinnComm $ 5,800.00
Red Peterson Utilities $ Not received yet.
In an effort to minimize cost for the drainage improvement we would recommend the
shorter directional drill option be approved. We will provide the amount of the second
quote when it is received.
