Single Sort Recycling Information for the City of Little Canada
Presented to the Mayor, City Council, City Staff Members and Residents of Little Canada
City Council Meeting June 14, 2006
Allied Waste Services (formerly BPI) and Waste Management have had a great deal of success with Single Sort Recycling in the
greater Twin Cities Area. The residents of these communities have really embraced the program and been the force behind its
success. The feedback from these residents has been overwhelmingly positive...and the results and participation show it.
Below is an outline of the increased recycling volumes several cities have seen after they have switched to Single Sort Recycling.
We feel that the City of Little Canada will experience the same types of results and its citizens will be thrilled with the program.
Here are some examples:
1) The City of Anoka began Single Sort Recycling on January 1, 2006. They had been doing the Two -Sort Recycling prior to that.
Their recycling participation rate jumped from about 60% of the households to over 90 %. The citizens love it.
2005 2006 Net Recycle
Two -Sort Single -Sort Tonnage
Recycling Tons Recycling Tons Improvement
January 66.70 100.05 33.35 more tons
February 60.32 87.11 26.79 more tons
March 65.31 95.92 29.61 more tons
April 70.70 103.07 32.37 more tons
May 95.44 157.12 61.68 more tons
+ 183.80 more tons
2) The City of Shoreview began Single Sort Recycling on August 1, 2006. Shoreview had 2 -sort recycling every other week prior
to that. In the first 8 months of Single Sort Recycling tonnages were 2,297 tons. In the last 8 months of 2 -Sort Recycling only
1,757 tons were recycled. This is an increase of 24 percent in volume. Participation has increased from 65 percent to 93 percent.
n a survey of Shoreview residents conducted by the hauler over 98 percent of respondents replied that they like the program.
3) The City of North St. Paul began with the Single Sort Recycling program on May 1, 2006 after years of being on the Two -Sort
Recycling program. During the first month of the new program, the number of households participating jumped to nearly 95 %,
and volume of recyclables collected increased by over 24 tons when comparing May 2005 to May 2006.
4) The City of Blaine converted from a 2 -sort weekly program to a Single Sort every other week program on January 1, 2004.
Blaine is a full service contract with trash and recycling service. The City of Blaine has seen a reduction in the tonnage of trash
placed out and an increase in the amount of recycling. The only program change was the conversion to Single Sort Recycling.
Garbage Recycling
Pounds Per Household Pounds Per Household
Per Month Per Month
2003 (2 -sort recycling)
2004 (Single Sort Recycling)
2005 (Single Sort Recycling)
217.02
187.12
195.73
40.38
53.39
56.54
Change in Pounds Per FIousehold (2003 versus 2005)
Trash -21.29 pounds Recycle +16.16
The citizens in these and other communities have really loved the program and have been the ones who have
driven the huge successes we have all seen. The Single Sort Recycling program has many advantages:
> No more sorting of materials- they can all be mixed in together
> It's expanded the acceptable -to- recycle list
> The cart has an attached lid that keeps the materials from blowing around on windy days
> The cart has easy -to -roll wheels that make it easier to maneuver than a bin
> Service is set for Every Other Week so you don't have to put the recycling out each week
> Less truck traffic and wear on your city streets because of every other week service
