AVIAYOR
Bill Blesener
COUNCIL
Jim LaValle
Rick Montour
Barbara Allan
John Keis
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600 ADMINISTRATOR
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048 Joel R. Hanson
www.uLlittle-canacla.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
To: Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
From: Bill Dircks, Public Works Superintendent
Date: January 18, 2006
Re: No Parking on Desoto St.
On any given night there are as many as twelve cars parked on the west side of Desoto St.
from Labore Road heading north. It is believed that the majority of these vehicles, if not
all of them, belong to residents of Montreal Courts. There is ample parking available in
the parking lots of these buildings. Many of these cars are parked for long periods of
time without moving. Staff recently had one towed that was abandoned there for at least
a month.
These cars have become a hazard during snow removal activities as well as in general
throughout the day. There is a city sidewalk that runs along the west side of Desoto St.
The parked cars interfere with Public Works' ability to plow the street from curb to curb
and the cars have interfered with our ability to clean the sidewalks as well. The plow
operator on that side of town said that he has not been able to plow that section of the
street to the curb at all this winter. During the day traffic heading south on Desoto must
swing wide to avoid these cars as they approach the intersection with Labore Road A
problem occurs when a vehicle is heading north on Desoto at the same time, especially
those turning right off of Lahore onto Desoto at the intersection.
Given that there appears to be ample parking available in the Montreal Courts parking
lots staff is requesting that council authorize the posting of "no parking" signs on both
sides of the street along Desoto St. from Labore Road to the southern driveway of the
Pioneer Park parking lot.
