Sign
Area
Freestanding Sign - Minnesota Ave.
200 square feet
Freestanding Sign — Highway 36
160 square feet
Hub Hobby Wall Sign
96 square feet
Mall Entrance Wall Sign
33 square feet
Austin Reid Hair Wall Sign
32 square feet
Sunsations Wall Sign
32 square feet
Sherwin Williams Wall Sign
90 square feet
Total
643 square feet
As shown in the table, the proposed signage is well below the allowable signage for the
site. Moreover, the proposed Sherwin Williams sign will be smaller than the existing
Mautz Paint sign, reducing total signage by about 50 square feet.
The applicant has indicated that the proposed Sherwin Williams sign will be designed to
"reverse out" the image from a dark background. The City granted the applicant a
permit for the replacement of that portion of the sign face on the freestanding signs. An
example of the proposed coloring for the wall sign is shown on those two freestanding
signs. This design meets the intent of the City's architectural guidelines for sign design.
Summary and Recommendation
The proposed Comprehensive Sign Plan for the Little Canada Mall appears to comply
with all of the requirements of the City's sign ordinance, as well as the architectural
guidelines for sign design. As such, planning staff recommends approval of the Sign
Plan as proposed.
Pc: Kathy Glanzer
Steve Westerhaus
Lee Elfering
Marion Newman, Viking Partnership, 200 S. 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55402
