LITTLE CANADA
PARKS AND RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117-1600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048
www. c i.l i ttl e -can ada. m n. us
TO:
FROM:
DATE:
RE:
MEMORANDUM
JIM MORELAN, Director
(65I) 766 -4045
DON BOWMAN, Program Coordinator
(651) 766 -4041
DEREK ANDERSON, Program Coordinator
(651) 766 -4041
BRAD VOLK, Maintenance Supervisor
(651) 766 -4056
Mayor Blesener and Members of the City Council
Jim Morelan, Parks & Recreation Director
March 22, 2006
Parks Maintenance Supervisor Position
Parks Maintenance Supervisor Brad Volk's resignation will take affect at the end of the
workday this Friday, March 24, 2006. Since receiving his resignation, I have held
various meetings with staff regarding filling this vacancy to the City's best advantage.
The time period that presents the most challenge to parks and recreation maintenance will
be upon us in less than a month. April, May, and early June are exceptionally hectic due
to the need to fertilize, spray, and mow turf areas, along with daily ballfield preparation
and irrigation maintenance. The daily summer maintenance crew of five college students
doesn't start until approximately the second week of June.
I have discussed the situation with current Parks Maintenance employee Derek Anderson.
Derek is interested in filling the position of Parks Maintenance Supervisor. Derek has
been involved in the supervision of the seasonal maintenance employees for several
years, and is very knowledgeable in every facet of our Parks & Recreation Department's
maintenance operation. While this change will create another void in our recreation
programming area, I feel Don Bowman and I can meet that need until a replacement can
be found for Derek in that area.
The result of Derek assuming the position of Parks Maintenance Supervisor will be the
need to fill Derek's current "half time" maintenance position. In my discussions with the
Public Works Superintendent and City Administrator, need has also been demonstrated
for an additional Public Works Maintenance Worker. I would propose to hire an
additional person on a temporary basis at this time with that person shared by both
departments, and to re- evaluate the position after six months. We currently have an
employee who has worked seasonal parks maintenance for the past four years, and has
also been working for the Public Works Department to fill the gap left by Rick Barber's
