MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
APRIL 5, 2012
2012, that would not be an ideal situation. Installation of the sidewalk a
year later would likely result in some damage to the new asphalt.
Sanders asked about the materials to be used for the sidewalk. The City
Engineer indicated that the sidewalk would be concrete, and in the areas
where it is necessary to pave the boulevard, stamped concrete would
likely be used. Sanders asked about the pavers adjacent to the
MeMenemy/Little Canada Road parking lot. The Engineer reported that
these pavers are settling and would have to be taken up since the sidewalk
area is being pushed back The recommendation is to remove the pavers
completely given the on -going settling issue and have a concrete sidewalk
and stamped concrete boulevard.
The Engineer again explained the situation where the trail north of Little
Canada Road comes out a few feet east of the crosswalk to McMenemy.
The consensus of the Commission was to have the crosswalk at the
intersection and to direct walkers /hikers to the crosswalk via signage. The
Commission indicated their support for the sidewalks and bike shoulders
that are proposed as part of this project.
ARBOR DAY The Director reported that an Arbor Day celebration will be held on
Friday, May 4°i, at 1:00 p.m. in Spooner Park. St. John's School 3'1 grade
class and Little Canada Elementary School's 4th grade classes will be in
attendance.
Sanders indicated that the celebration will involve replanting in the
wooded area that is being cleared in Spooner Park for Canadian Days.
Sanders noted that once the area is cleared of brush and scrub trees, there
will be a reforestation project to re- establish the area. Sanders also
reported that McKesson Drug has contacted the City about their interest in
undertaking a spring community service project. Sanders indicated that
involving McKesson in the reforestation of this area may be a good
project.
SPOONER The Director reported that arrangements have been made for the City to
PARK utilize the prison crew that the City of Shoreview currently has contracted
CLEARING through the Department of Corrections to take down the scrub trees and
PROJECT brush in Spooner Park in the area designated for expansion for Canadian
FOR Days. Work will likely start next week and should be completed in 2 to
CANADIAN 3 days. The next step will be to have the tree stumps ground down, the
DAYS area tilled, and the turf re- established. The City has a chipper for
processing the smaller material. The larger wood will be cut up into 16-
inch lengths and placed at the side of the road for the taking.
4
