MINUTES <br />PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION <br />APRIL 5, 2012 <br />CITY The Director reported that the City Council has opted to continue the full <br />NEWSLETTER color version of the newsletter. He also noted that the City is soliciting <br />pictures of its parks, sporting events, etc. from the general public for use <br />in the newsletter. <br />ENHANCE The Director indicated that the Enhance Fitness program has been <br />FITNESS extended to June 15, 2012. This is an exercise program that is designed <br />for older adults featuring cardiovascular conditioning exercises, strength <br />training, and balance routines that help improve flexibility, bone density, <br />and stability. The program is held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:15 <br />p.m. to 2:15 p.m. at the Old Fire Hall. <br />PLAYGROUND The Director noted that another 2012 goal is "Park Enhancement Plan ". <br />EQUIPMENT As part of the action plan for this goal, a playground equipment <br />PLAN replacement plan was to be put together. The Director indicated that a <br />playground equipment supply company that this City has purchased <br />equipment from was going to put together a proposed replacement plan. <br />He will be contacting that company for this plan. <br />YOGA <br />The Director reported that a former Little Canada resident who used to <br />teach a Jazzercise class for the City contacted him about teaching a yoga <br />class. That class will be held on Monday, May 2151, from 6 to 7 p.m. in <br />Spooner Park. All ages are welcome and no prior yoga experience is <br />necessary. There will be no charge for this class. <br />MEETINGS The Director reported that the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department <br />WITH THE conducts meetings with representatives of the various cities' parks <br />SHERIFF'S departments to review issues related to parks safety. Another meeting <br />DEPARTMENT will be held in a couple of weeks. The Director indicated that this is an <br />ON PARK opportunity to meet the community service volunteers who patrol the <br />SAFETY parks evenings and weekends as well as discuss common problems. <br />ISSUES <br />Maida asked if incidents increase in the spring. The Director replied that <br />the increase in incidents occurs when school is out for the summer. <br />FORMER The Director indicated that Jeff Heikke has suggested the possibility of <br />NORM'S the City's acquisition of the former Norm's Tires property for <br />PROPERTY redevelopment into some type of community space. The Director was <br />unsure of what exactly Heikke envisioned, however. Fahey noted that <br />while this may be great idea, it would also take a large parcel of land from <br />the tax rolls. She indicated that it might also be something to present to <br />the Little Canada Recreation Association for their consideration.
