are the only hauler capable of this option. All other are two -sort systems. (Note that is a
dramatic improvement from the early days of recycling when we had multi - sort.) WMI
would like to go to single sort, but the other haulers cannot at this time. We could look at
options such as allowing WMI to do single sort, but that may make our non -WMI residents
unhappy. Another option would be to have WMI do all of the recycling. The other haulers
may not like that. In time, I believe BFI will add this option. If you would like us to focus on
this in the meantime, please let me know.
Conduct Evaluation of Skating & Warming House Facilities at the Old Fire Hall — With
the budget crunch of a couple of years ago, our Parks & Recreation Director did track
utilization at our two skating rinks. With the easing of the budget concerns, we did not
proceed with any recommendations in this area. If you would like more info, the P & R
Director could talk about this at an upcoming Update Workshop.
Install Information Kiosks in City Parks — There has been considerable discussion about
signage at our parks facilities. I will leave this to the Parks and Recreation Commission for
any specific recommendations. The P & R Director could also talk about this item at a future
Update Workshop.
Upgrade Appearance of Storm Water Ponds — This was combined the approved goal of
Community Appearance. We plan on using ICWC crews to work on this over the next couple
of years via replanting of these areas to enhance appearance.
Negotiate Right of First Refusal for Property East of Fire Station — This has been
mentioned in previous goal setting sessions. This topic would seem to warrant more
discussion between the Fire Department and the City Council. Negotiating a Right of First
Refusal should not be overly cumbersome.
Update Outdoor Siren Warning System — 1 am asking our Emergency Services Director to
prepare a recommendation in this regard. If warranted, we will incorporate it into the 2006
CIP Budget.
Review Consulting Services /Conduct RFP's — With no disrespect intended to our current
providers, staff believe this should be done periodically to ensure we are controlling costs and
obtaining the desired service levels. Recently, we achieved significant savings by the
changeover in City Engineers. In the past, it has helped us control costs with our Auditors
(we should do this again for 2006). City Attorney and Planner are other possibilities.
Develop Replacement Schedule for Playground Equipment — No one questions the need to
maintain these facilities in terms of safety and appearance. However, there is lack of
agreement on the need to "replace" equipment because it has become dated versus on -going
maintenance. Much of our equipment was purchased in the late 80's and early 90's. We will
continue to look at this issue internally and perhaps the P & R Director will comment on it at
an upcoming workshop.
5
