Planning staff requested information on outdoor storage from surrounding communities
including Maplewood, Shoreview, Roseville, Vadnais Heights, Arden Hills and White
Bear Lake to provide context for the City's current regulations. For many, complete
answers are not yet available — we have summarized the combination of personal
contacts and ordinance research in the following table. We hope to have a more
complete review available prior to the City Council meeting:
The survey shows that some of the Cities do not allow outdoor storage, although a
majority allow it by Conditional Use Permit only. Maplewood appears to insert
requirements as a part of their Conditional Use Permit review, although few of the
ordinances appear to have a comprehensive set of restrictions for their Conditional Use
Permit requirements. As noted, we hope to have more complete information prior to the
City Council meeting on May 25.
Little
Canada
Rose-
ville
Maple-
wood
Vadnais
Heights
Shore-
view
White
Bear L
Arden
Hills
Outdoor Storage in most restrictive
Industrial District?
CUP
Only
CUP
Only
CUP
Only
CUP
Only
CUP
Only
No
No
Is there an area restriction on
outdoor storage?
75% of
bldg.
area
NA
City may
require
CUP,
but not
in Ord.
NA
Does it have to be screened?
Yes,
fence
or Idsp.
Yes,
fence
or wall
City may
require
Yes
Yes
Does the Ordinance have a height
restriction?
Fence
ht. 8
feet
NA
NA
Not in
Ord.
Max. 8
feet
What Setbacks apply to Outdoor
Storage?
10',side
or rear
yards
NA
Distance
from
Res.
NA
NA
The survey shows that some of the Cities do not allow outdoor storage, although a
majority allow it by Conditional Use Permit only.
