Hanson
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Greg Schroeder, Public Works Director
DATE: December 11, 2002
RE: Round Lake Sediment Removal /Storm Sewer Repair Update
Over the past few months Ramsey County and the City of Little Canada have been working
together to remove a large (approximately 500 cubic yard) sediment delta from Round Lake near
the Jessica Court storm sewer outlet into Round Lake. This sediment delta is a result of winter
street sanding efforts by Ramsey County and the City of Little Canada as well as miscellaneous
dirt and debris being flushed through the storm sewer system in this area. Removal of the delta
has been a challenge due to restricted access to the delta and our desire to keep disruption of the
area and overall costs down.
Last week Ramsey County crews accessed Round Lake via Ramsey County and City of Little
Canada utility and drainage easements between 63 and 69 Jessica Court and removed the
sediment delta. They took approximately 50 tandem dump truck loads out of the lake. Damage
to the yards was minimal and they will be restored in the spring.
Once the lake ice was thick enough we were able to inspect the storm sewer outlet and pipe
going back to Jessica Court. We have determined that the outlet and about 30 to 40 feet of pipe
have settled resulting in pipe joint separation. These joint separations have been causing the
development of sinkholes along the pipe over the last few years. Due to the amount of work
required to correct this failure and the current depth of frost in the ground, we have determined
that it would be more efficient to repair this storm sewer in the spring just prior to our proposed
yard restoration. This has been discussed with the residents impacted and they are in agreement.
The estimated cost for this project is:
DNR Permit $500
Remove sediment $11,000
Repair Storm Sewer $5,000
Restore yards $1 000
Total $17,500
11:AGrogS \Storm WaterARound Lake sedimentdoc
