Typically, scout troops have been utilizing school
buildings for their meetings.
The 623 School District has recently amended their policies regarding use of school buildings by
scout troops. This policy still allows free use of school facilities provided that certain criteria is met.
(Please see memo attached outlining the specifics of the School District's policy.)
I feel the City's present policy is working as it was intended and no change is warranted. Opening
the use of the Old Fire Hall to these two scout troops would likely open the door to additional
requests by various girl and boy scout troops, brownies, etc. This utilization will also create
additional maintenance costs for the facility, as well as conflict with current City Parks & Recreation
Department scheduling, and have the potential of displacing revenue - producing rentals.
I would recommend that the scout troops work toward meeting the criteria that the School District
has established that would allow for the continued free utilization of school district facilities for their
troop meetings.
