G`'y Ok Little Can
dgd
COMMUNITY PRIDE
1953 - 2003
515 Little Canada Road, Liule Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766-4048
www.ci.little- canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Property Owners Along Park Street
FROM: Gregory Schroeder, Public Works Director
DATE: August 15, 2003
RE: On- Street Parking
MAYOR
Michael I. Fahey
COUNCIL
Jim LaValle
Matt Anderson
Rick Montour
13i11 Blesener
AD2MINISTI /1TOR
Joel R. Hanson
Some of the residents living along Park Street have expressed concern about on- street
parking at the south end of Park Street. It is their feeling that a safety hazard exists when
vehicles are parked along the curb as a result of restricted visibility due to the hill and
curve in the street between approximately 2550 and 2560 Park Street.
For your information, the street is 32 feet wide with surmountable curb, and parking is
currently allowed on both sides of the street.
I have looked at the street from a public safety perspective considering not only the
visibility issues raised, but also access issues related to emergency vehicles. The
following vehicle widths are provided for your reference:
Plow Truck 11 feet (width from wing to side mirror)
Fire Truck 10 feet (width at side mirrors)
Full Size Pickup Truck 8.5 feet (width at side mirrors)
Compact Car 6.5 feet (width at side mirrors)
Continued Parking on Both Sides of the Street -
Utilizing the dimensions above, if vehicles are parked on both sides in this section of
street, traffic must pass through a restricted width of only 15 to 19 feet. That only allows
about 7.5 to 9.5 feet per vehicle, if two vehicles coming from opposite directions at the
same time happen to meet.
No Parking on One Side of the Street —
If a no- parking zone were to be imposed on one side of the street, the restricted width
would increase to between 23.5 and 25.5 feet which would be sufficient for maintenance
and safety vehicles to pass.
If the no parking zone were to be imposed along the east side of Park Street it would
provide an unobstructed line of site for drivers backing out of their driveways minimizing
3
