COMMUNITY PRIDE
1953 — 2003
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 551 17 -1600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048
mvcm.ci.little- canada.maus
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey & Members of the City Council
FROM: Greg Schroeder, Public Works Director
DATE: May 23, 2003
RE: 2003 Street Seal Coating
MAYOR
Michael 1. Fahey
COUNCIL
Jim LaValte
latt Anderson
Rick Montour
1311 Blesener
ADiAIIA73TRA7oR
Joel R. Hanson
Background
On Wednesday, May 14, 2003, the City of Little Canada received, opened, and read aloud the
bids for our street seal coating. In an effort to get the best value for the City, we combined our
bid with the City of Vadnais Heights and also requested bids using virgin and recycled
aggregate. Attached is a summary of the bids received. Also, attached is the list of streets to be
seal coated.
This year the City of Vadnais Heights is going to try the quick drying (CRS -2P) bituminous seal
coating material to see if the benefits are worth the extra cost. The City of Little Canada is
proposing to stay with the Standard CRS -2 bituminous material.
B udget
Bids were requested from seven companies and only three companies submitted bids. The bids
ranged from a low of $0.50 per square yard to a high $0.81 per square yard. Last year (2002) the
low bid for this work using recycled FA -2 aggregate was $0.490 per square yard or $0.01 lower
than the 2003 bid for the FA -2.
After evaluating the bids, it was determined that Pearson Bros., Inc. provides the best value for
the City of Little Canada at an estimated total value of $20,082.50. The 2003 budget included
$27,500 for this seal coating work.
Recommendation
The Council direct staff to enter into a contract with Pearson Bros., Inc., for our 2003 street seal
coating.
I- I: \GregS \Streets \Seal Coating\2003 Seal Coating memo to Council.doe
