PROJECT GOAL
The goal of this program is to improve the living environment of the urban area through increasing
wildlife habitat, protecting surface and groundwater quality, and increasing storm -water runoff
infiltration.
VEGETATION ZONES
In the buffer zone three major overlapping vegetation zones exist; these are the:
• aquatic zone, which includes submergent, floating leaf and emergent vegetation
• wet meadow zone (transition zone), which includes wildflowers, grasses, sedges, and
shrubs that grow in moist soil
• upland -which can be further sub - divided into:
- upland —moist zone, which includes wildflowers, grasses, sedges, shrubs and
trees that grow in rich, fertile, and moist (but not saturated) soils.
- upland -dry zone, which includes wildflowers, grasses, sedges; shrubs and trees
that grow in dry and well drained soils.
The planting list recommended for this project appears on the next page. Only native plant
species should be planted in the buffer zone within 25 feet of the waters edge. The plant
species selected are all found in the Ramsey County area and are well adapted to grow in the
conditions present at the site.
Lakeshore Vegetation Zones (Typical)
(DNR Graphic)
