Hanson As requested by the Council, the following information on replacement of City street signs with larger signs that also include the City's logo is provided. Background: We currently have 6 inch high green with 4 inch high white lettering street signs through out the city similar to that shown in photo A. Over the last few years I have been receiving some complaints that our street name signs are hard to read. I have tried to resolve this by having the street name signs placed in more visible locations. However, some of them are still hard to see. The "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices" has revised its recommendations to improve the legibility of street name signs. They currently recommend using upper and lower case letters and that these upper case letters should be 6 inches high with 4 '/ inch high lower case letters. This would result in a 9 inch high street name sign similar to what Maplewood and Vadnais Heights are using as shown in photos B and C. Photos D, E and F are provided to show the difference in visibility between a 6 inch and 9 inch high sign. A double faced 6 inch high sign with 4" high letters cost on average around $29 each as compared to $36 for a 9 inch high sign with 6" high letters. My plan was to ask the Council for authorization to upgrade to the 9 inch high street name signs as the old signs were either damaged or deteriorated to the point where they needed to be replaced. In addition, with Council authorization, my plan was to have 9 inch high street name signs installed as by city crews as part of our street reconstruction projects as well as the construction of new streets. Types of Street Name Signs There are many ways to install street name signs, but the two most common are with a square post system or a round post system place in a corner of the intersecting streets.
