two single sided street name signs per street. As shown on photo C the City of Vadnais Heights
uses this system with a 9" high sign. The round post system requires a mounting cap and cross
bracket to mount the street name signs. This bracket system reduces the number of street name
sign plates, but requires the use of two double -faced sign plates. We currently use this system as
does the cities of Roseville and Maplewood. Photo B shows the Maplewood system with a 9"
high sign. The cost of the two street name sign systems are almost the same as shown on the
attached cost estimates.
City Logo
To highlight city awareness, the Council requested information on the cost to include the City's
logo on street name signs. The two common ways to include a city logo on a street name is by
either screening it in with the lettering or by creating a separate sticker and sticking it on the
sign. A 5 "X5" red and black on white background screened logo would cost an additional $4 per
street name sign side as compared to $3.50 for a 5 "X5" red and black on white background
sticker logo. The sticker logo last as long as the screened logo.
Street Name Sign Replacement Plans
Since I did not know how many or what street name signs the Council may be interested in
replacing, I developed four different plans for your consideration that range from replacing all of
the street name signs in the entire city to only replacing those along boarder streets. A discussion
of each plan follows. A plan map showing the location for new street name signs is attached for
your reference. Note that we do have some intersections where the street name signs are
mounted on the traffic light support arm only as well as street name signs on a both a post in the
intersection corner as well as mounted on the traffic light support arm. In addition we have
intersections where another city may have installed their street name sign and we do not have
any.
The following assumptions are included in the plans:
• A city of Little Canada street name sign would be installed at all identified locations.
• For continuity purposes, we would replace private street name signs at locations where a
private street abuts a public street.
• A sticker type red and black logo on a white background would be used (lowest cost).
• The street name sign that identifies a county road would not include a city logo. This
would include Rice Street, a portion of Little Canada Road, Keller Parkway, Edgerton
Street, Centerville Road, and County Road D. Besides a cost savings, this also tells
residents that those streets are not Little Canada Streets.
• A boarder street is defined as a street that runs along our city limit.
• A main street is defined as a street that is used to feed many other streets.
Entire City
There are 151 known street name sign locations in Little Canada as shown on the attached map.
This includes 11 private street sign locations where a private street abuts a public street as well
as 5 sign location for streets we will be soon deleting or are not officially known. Assuming a
sticker type logo is used, the estimated cost to install a new 9" high street name sign with city
logo at all 151 locations is approximately $20,425. This plan has the largest initial cost,
I-I: \Gregs \ Signs \Street Name Signs.doc
2
