suspending the sentence the judge has given me another tool to use in achieving
compliance with Jacobsen. These have been some of those "high priority, time
consuming" cases.
I have sent out over 100 pieces of mail regarding code violations. Each piece of
mail represents at least one action that I have taken. It may represent receiving a
complaint, inspecting to verify the violation, writing a mild tone letter asking the
violator to fix the problem, reinspecting to ensure that the violation has been taken
care of, sending another letter ordering compliance with a deadline date,
reinspecting, issuing a final warning, reinspecting, and then finally issuing the
citation. This does involve time, but I believe the citizens are better served when I
exhaust all other possibilities before turning to the courts. It looks better to the
judge too.
I have dealt with many other code violation issues verbally, either in person or
on the phone. I can usually handle temporary sign permit violations in this
manner.
These accomplishments have been done this in somewhat less than six months
of working half time. I spent six weeks on a long planned trip of a lifetime to
Alaska. I am enjoying my employment here, most days, and I am trying to give
the city a good return on the dollars invested in me. My major priorities have been
set by the city manager and as far as I know I have been meeting his expectations.
If you have concerns, please, let Joel know and I will try to address them in a
timely fashion.
ode Enforcement
Page 43
